12:00 – 1:30pm | Room E53-482
30 Wadsworth St, Cambridge, MA 02142

RSVP here by Friday, December 1st. Lunch will be provided.

Description: Mehdi Jamei, Bayes Impact Executive Director, will present an exciting health care project the team is working on. The project looks at addressing health care network adequacy. Network Adequacy refers to a health plan’s ability to provide timely access to a sufficient number of physicians and services, and is a major problem in the US.

Bayes has partnered with the California Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC), which is responsible for monitoring the compliance of health plans representing over 25 million people in California. Together, they have built an open source web application to generate representative population points for the State of California based on USPS and Census data. Mehdi will demo the application during his presentation.

Bayes is currently working on extending this application to help regulators accurately and transparently measure health plan compliance to time and distance standards. The application will enable customization of standards to cater to different policies, allowing Bayes to expand its technology to other states and agencies.

Mehdi will also discuss the broader topics of open government, government as a platform, and independent public services. He will highlight issues with the current structure of government as a “service provider” and why we need a new model to engage citizens and increase reliability and accountability in government.

Mehdi Jamei has a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from UC Berkeley. He joined Bayes Impact as a data scientist and technical lead in 2015, and has worked on a variety of data-driven social impact solutions, including a military skills translator for veterans looking for civilian jobs with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), a predictive model for risk of hospital readmission with Sutter Health, claims analysis pipeline for the Quality Payment Program (QPP) with Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
