Jonathan Phillips is a Faculty Affiliate at MIT GOV/LAB. He is an Assistant Professor at Leiden University, the Netherlands. His research seeks to understand the political roots of effective governance. His research projects focus on the conditions under which politicians may choose to introduce governance reforms that dismantle clientelism; the interactions between state and society that shape vaccination coverage; how income inequalities distort public service delivery; and how material and social incentives shape women’s public participation. Projects with MIT GOV/LAB include collecting data with eHealth Africa to understand how social pressures and information diffusion contribute to vaccine willingness and hesitation in Nigeria.
